Message from the Department Head:
Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering at New Mexico State University (NMSU). Our department has a rich history of teaching excellence and a diverse group of faculty whose research efforts have led to the development of nationally and internationally recognized programs in areas related to the environment, geotechnics, structures, transportation, and water resources. Our program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), and we take pride in offering an outstanding education through a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum. Our goal is to prepare our graduates to achieve professional engineering licensure and become future leaders as public employees and private consultants in the various civil engineering fields.
Due to contributions from our civil engineering alumni, we are able to offer a substantial number of scholarships to deserving undergraduate and graduate students. Scholarships are open to entering freshmen, continuing students during their sophomore through senior years, and graduate students. Paid internships are also available for students to gain practical work experience. Our department has partnered with industry and other universities to offer numerous research, internship, and co-op education opportunities in civil engineering. Student development is enhanced through initiatives supported by the following programs within civil engineering at NMSU:
- Re-Inventing the Nation’s Urban Water Infrastructure (ReNUWIt), http://www.renuwit.org/
- Center for Bio-mediated and Bio-inspired Geotechnics (CBBG), http://biogeotechnics.org/
- Alliance for Minority Participation (AMP), https://nmampconf.nmsu.edu/
- Bridge Inspection Program, http://ce.nmsu.edu/bridge-inspection-program/
Through these programs and other research grants, our students can work closely with the faculty on contemporary issues including, but not limited to, ground stabilization, high performance materials, intelligent transportation systems, remote sensing, renewable energy, resilient infrastructure, structural health monitoring, sustainable construction, traffic modeling and simulation, and water treatment and reuse. To learn more, visit the websites listed above and also schedule a department tour to have a look at the computer and laboratory facilities that are available to our students. Thanks again for your interest in Civil Engineering at NMSU, and please feel free to contact us at email@example.com if you have any questions about the department.
