Dr. David V. Jauregui, Foreman Professor and Department Head

Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering at New Mexico State University (NMSU). Our department has a rich history of teaching excellence and a diverse group of faculty whose research efforts have led to the development of nationally and internationally recognized programs in areas related to the environment, geotechnics, structures, transportation, and water resources. Our program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), and we take pride in offering an outstanding education through a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum. Our goal is to prepare our graduates to achieve professional engineering licensure and become future leaders as public employees and private consultants in the various civil engineering fields.

Due to contributions from our civil engineering alumni, we are able to offer a substantial number of scholarships to deserving undergraduate and graduate students. Scholarships are open to entering freshmen, continuing students during their sophomore through senior years, and graduate students. Paid internships are also available for students to gain practical work experience. Our department has partnered with industry and other universities to offer numerous research, internship, and co-op education opportunities in civil engineering. Student development is enhanced through initiatives supported by the following programs within civil engineering at NMSU:

Through these programs and other research grants, our students can work closely with the faculty on contemporary issues including, but not limited to, ground stabilization, high performance materials, intelligent transportation systems, remote sensing, renewable energy, resilient infrastructure, structural health monitoring, sustainable construction, traffic modeling and simulation, and water treatment and reuse. The Civil Engineering Department was recently featured in NMSU’s Salon Discovery (Enchantment of the Mind) event at NMSU’s Atkinson Recital Hall. A showcase video on “NMSU Civil Engineering: En Route to a Better Infrastructure” was arranged by the NMSU Creative Media Institute.

To learn more about the NMSU Department of Civil Engineering, visit the programs listed above and also schedule a department tour to have a look at the computer and laboratory facilities that are available to our students. Thanks again for your interest in Civil Engineering at NMSU, and please feel free to contact us at civil@nmsu.edu if you have any questions about the department.

Our Mission:

The mission of the Civil Engineering Department is to offer a high quality and accredited degree that prepares our graduates for professional licensure leading to successful civil engineering careers in industry and government or for success at the graduate level. Toward this end, the Civil Engineering Department will recruit and maintain a diverse, highly skilled faculty that will strive towards the following goals:

  • Prepare graduates for licensure, professional careers, and life-long learning.
  • Provide a strong technical foundation for engineering design and problem solving.
  • Encourage modern and effective instruction through quality student-faculty interactions.
